School Choir Shine at Brentwood Centre

The Basildon Lower Academy Choir performed at the Brentwood Centre on Monday 1st December in a spectacular concert celebrating the music of legendary film composer John Williams.

One of the most loved composers of our time, Williams is a true musical icon, having won 5 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 25 Grammy Awards, and numerous other honours across his remarkable career.

Our choir joined several other schools, all singing their hearts out to kick off this month’s festive celebrations — the first major performance in the run-up to Christmas. Organised by Essex Music Services, the concert featured massed choir performances accompanied by the outstanding Essex Youth Chamber Orchestra.

The 1,600-seat venue was filled to the brim as audiences were taken on a musical journey through some of John Williams’ most treasured works — from Jurassic Park and The Terminal to Harry Potter — all culminating in a joyful finale featuring the choir in a Home Alone medley.

Basildon Academies Choir leader, Miss Stoddard, reflected on the evening:

“This was our third concert at the Brentwood Centre, and each year it gets bigger and better. I am incredibly proud of how our students have learned the material — including the often complex harmony work beautifully arranged by Phil Toms. They performed brilliantly, making not only the school proud but representing the community of Basildon wonderfully.”

We look forward to welcoming families and friends to our next performance at the Basildon Lower Academy on Thursday 18th December, as part of our Christmas Fayre from 3:00–5:00pm. Alongside festive performances, there will be a range of Christmas stalls created by our students, with all proceeds going to the Fairtrade Foundation. It promises to be a joyful afternoon of music, giving and seasonal cheer for our whole school community.

“The experience was really good. I enjoyed it, and the parents who came to support us were really lovely. I felt confident and happy when we were singing, and my favourite songs were Run Run Rudolph and Star of Bethlehem. I really think our choir performed well.” Israel.M – Year 8

“It was the first time I had ever seen an orchestra. I felt like I was in a movie, and at one point I was singing and moving along with the music. I would love to represent the school again next year; I’d be so excited to go.” David.O – Year 8
