Students Explore Careers in the Makeup Industry

Lower Academy students recently had the opportunity to step into the world of professional makeup as part of the academies Careers Taster Programme.

Aspiring makeup artists and cosmetology enthusiasts took part in an engaging workshop led by professional makeup artist Alex, who has worked on projects for the BBC and a range of magazine photo shoots.

During the session, students learned more about what it takes to build a successful career in the industry. Alex shared valuable advice about the key things to consider before entering the profession, including the qualifications needed, setting prices for services, and the importance of carrying out consultations to understand each client’s needs.

Students also explored the practical side of the industry, discussing the importance of insurance and professional protections, the different niches within makeup artistry such as specific styles or specialisms, and how social media can be a powerful tool for building a client base and showcasing work.

To bring the learning to life, Alex demonstrated a basic makeup routine, explaining how professionals consider factors such as colour, eye shape and skin type when creating a look for someone.

As a thank you for their participation, students were given some hair glitter to take away so they could practise their styling skills at home.

The session provided a fun and informative insight into the beauty industry, helping students learn more about the skills, knowledge and creativity involved in pursuing a career in makeup artistry.
