Year 8 Take Part in Employment Workshop

Year 8 students recently took part in an Essential Skills for Employment workshop, delivered by Andrea from the Department for Work and Pensions.

This session built on the careers workshop Year 7 attended earlier in the year, but with a fresh focus: not just identifying the skills needed to succeed in life and work but understanding how to gain them.

Through group discussions and activities, students explored key themes such as recognising personal strengths, developing a growth mindset, learning from failure, and staying motivated. They were encouraged to reflect on essential skills like teamwork, leadership, staying positive, problem-solving, and being organised — all vital qualities that employers value and that support success in education and beyond.

Andrea also highlighted how online success stories often skip the reality of persistence, setbacks, and effort behind the scenes; a reminder that achievement is built through resilience and dedication.

Students were encouraged to build their skills not just in the classroom, but through real-world experiences — whether that’s volunteering, getting involved in their community, or simply stepping out of their comfort zone to meet new people. These kinds of experiences help build confidence, communication skills, and independence.

Many of these skills are already being developed through our extra-curricular club activities. Whether it's STEM, sports, creative arts, or leadership opportunities, the transferable skills students gain in these settings are the same ones that employers and colleges look for.

“I learned about teamwork, speaking, listening, problem-solving, creativity and aiming high. But one thing that really stood out was the idea of an iceberg: people only see the surface. They don’t always see the hard work, dedication, and time it takes underneath to achieve something.” Deborah.O
