Year 8 Students Explore University Life
A group of Year 8 students recently enjoyed an inspiring and informative visit to the University of Essex's Colchester campus.
The trip offered students a unique opportunity to experience what university life is really like, with the aim of raising aspirations and broadening their understanding of future education and career pathways.
Led by university student ambassadors, the group were given a guided tour of the impressive campus, including student accommodation, the sports centre and gym, the library, and various study areas. One of the highlights of the tour was a visit to the multi-million-pound STEM Centre, where students took part in an interactive session with a university Skills Tutor.
The tutor spoke with the students about what to expect from university life — including lectures, seminars, independent learning, and the support available. They also discussed the variety of undergraduate degree courses on offer, including the option to study through a degree apprenticeship, which combines 80% work with 20% university-based learning.
The group also learned about the Students’ Union and its role in student life. From helping shape policies through student leadership, to organising social events and creating new societies, the union plays a key part in ensuring students feel connected and supported throughout their university journey.
In the afternoon, students were split into teams and given a challenge: to plan and budget for a student event at the university. This required them to design a timetable for the day, factor in staffing and tour logistics, and use strong communication and teamwork skills to present a workable plan. It was a fun and practical way for students to apply what they had learned, while also developing key organisational and planning abilities.
