Year 9 Take on Royal Navy Challenge

Last week, Year 9 students took part in interactive assemblies and workshops led by the Royal Navy Youth Engagement Team, gaining an insight into the Navy’s global role in conflict prevention, humanitarian assistance, and international partnerships.

Students learned about the wide range of career opportunities available, from engineering and technical roles to the Royal Marines, as well as the Navy’s strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and education.

In the practical workshops, students worked in teams using Meccano-style kits to build a freestanding transmission tower capable of restoring communications to a hurricane-hit island. The challenge tested their teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving before each tower was put to the test under “hurricane conditions.”

The sessions offered an exciting opportunity for students to develop real-world skills while linking to the school’s focus on STEM learning and personal development.

“I really enjoyed the workshop and assembly. The assembly was very informative and well presented. It showed the importance of the Navy. The workshop was great fun, especially the teamwork exercise. My friends and I worked very well together and had lots of fun. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and I really appreciate the Royal Navy team for coming to our school.” Martyna.K

“We took part in lots of different reaction-based games that stimulated our minds, bodies, and reaction speed. I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to take part in this workshop with the Navy.” Maddison.A

“The workshop experience was really fun with building the tower and taking part in all the activities. Everything was very engaging and full of teamwork challenges and games. The memory games were quite difficult though. It was also cool to watch the videos and learn about the different roles and ships.” Mert.A
