Catering

Our Vision

Our catering curriculum is broad, ambitious, and inclusive, designed to provide all students with the knowledge, skills, and cultural capital needed to succeed in life. Through exposure to a diverse range of global cuisines, students develop an understanding of different cultures, supporting social mobility and widening horizons. The curriculum is carefully sequenced, enabling students to build on prior learning and develop practical skills progressively.

Theory is explicitly linked to practice. Key concepts such as Farm to Fork (British Values), Hygiene, and Healthy Eating reinforce the wider school curriculum and allow students to apply knowledge from subjects such as science in a meaningful, real-life context. Expert chef teachers model high expectations, inspiring students to take pride in their work and develop a passion for cooking.

Cooking is taught as an essential life skill. Students learn how to prepare healthy, affordable meals, equipping them for independence and future wellbeing. Literacy is supported through engagement with a culturally diverse recipe book, while numeracy is embedded through weighing, measuring, scaling, and proportioning.

Our Way

High-quality teaching is delivered by expert staff with industry experience, ensuring authenticity and engagement. Lessons are predominantly practical, enabling all learners to access the curriculum and see immediate progress. A spiralled approach ensures key skills and concepts are revisited and embedded over time.

Teaching is adaptive and inclusive: questioning, modelling, and targeted support ensure all students, regardless of starting point, can achieve. Small group teaching fosters strong relationships and allows for personalised feedback. No student is left behind.

Students are regularly introduced to new ingredients, techniques, and dishes, developing both their technical vocabulary and cultural awareness. As they progress, learning environments increasingly reflect real-life kitchen settings, preparing students for further education, employment, and training.

Opportunities for self-evaluation and reflection are integral, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and continuously improve.

Our Goal

Success in catering is demonstrated through confident, independent learners who can apply their knowledge and skills in practical contexts. Students:

  • Make strong and sustained progress from their starting points
  • Demonstrate resilience, independence, and pride in their work
  • Develop a secure understanding of healthy eating and food safety
  • Gain a wide repertoire of dishes and cooking techniques
  • Apply literacy and numeracy skills confidently in real-life situations
  • Show increased cultural awareness through exposure to global cuisines
  • Are motivated, engaged, and ready to learn in every lesson

Students leave with the knowledge and skills to feed themselves and others affordably and well, alongside a genuine appreciation of food as a form of creativity and cultural expression. The curriculum supports improved social mobility and prepares students for life beyond school, not just examinations.
