Literacy
Our Vision
The Literacy curriculum is designed to promote Diversity, Student Values and Inclusion through the different styles of reading materials that we use. We wish to empower learners to become more confident readers and to foster a passion for reading. The curriculum is designed to allow students to build upon previous knowledge and skills learnt within Reading and Literacy. Learners are actively encouraged to develop their basic skills such as comprehension and fluency through their engagement with a range of styles of reading materials. We strongly want the learners to understand that “Reading is not just novels; it is what interests you to read” that is important.
Our Way
The texts that we use in the Literacy Curriculum are chosen to cover different interests and cultures to inspire the learners to engage with reading as much as possible. Therefore by exposing the learners to different reading materials during their lessons we are striving to develop their vocabulary skills as much as possible to enable them to access as many different areas of reading as possible. The four aspects of Reading and Literacy that we focus on are: Comprehension, Vocabulary, Analysis and Inference as well as encouraging learners to be fluent and accurate readers of varied styles of reading materials.
Our Goal
In Literacy success means that learners are actively engaging in some form of reading in a successful and purposeful way that prepares them for their future experiences and that their reading abilities and confidence has improved so that they are not held back in the future by not being able to access the written word.
