Our curriculum is designed in line with the KS3 National Curriculum, ensuring breadth, depth and progression. It develops knowledge, skills and cultural capital, while embedding Literacy (through reading the Situation and Need, Design Brief, analysing Existing Products and Evaluation of Ideas), Numeracy (through measuring and marking out and ratio) and Personal Development (through resilience). Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. This is partly done by knowledge from subjects such as, Mathematics, Science, ICT and Art. Teaching ensures all learnings feel safe, valued and included, with adaptive approaches. It teaches the learner valuable skills, such as being critical, building discussions, evaluating evidence, and how to communicate and problem solving. Careers links and real-world applications are embedded throughout due to the nature of our DT curriculum.  

High-quality teaching is delivered by expert staff with industry experience, ensuring authenticity and engagement. Lessons are predominantly practical, enabling all learners to access the curriculum and see immediate progress. A spiralled approach ensures key skills and concepts are revisited and embedded over time.

Teaching is adaptive and inclusive: questioning, modelling, and targeted support ensure all students, regardless of starting point, can achieve. Small group teaching fosters strong relationships and allows for personalised feedback. No student is left behind.

Students are regularly introduced to new ingredients, techniques, and dishes, developing both their technical vocabulary and cultural awareness. As they progress, learning environments increasingly reflect real-life kitchen settings, preparing students for further education, employment, and training.

Opportunities for self-evaluation and reflection are integral, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and continuously improve.

Success means all learners acquire secure knowledge and can apply skills independently. Learners are then prepared for further study in KS4 and have begun lifelong learning with resilience for when DIY is needed in their own lives.
