At The Basildon Lower Academy, we believe that Key Stage 3 provides the foundation for successful learning, personal development and future achievement. Our KS3 curriculum is designed to develop students' knowledge, skills and understanding across a broad range of subjects while fostering curiosity, resilience and independence. 

Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, students build on prior learning from primary school and develop the essential knowledge and cultural capital needed for success at Key Stage 3 and beyond. We ensure that all students experience a rich and ambitious curriculum that promotes high aspirations and reflects our trust ethos of “Aspire, Believe, Achieve.” This curriculum equips students with the confidence, skills and character required to become successful learners and responsible citizens. 

Students learn through a knowledge rich curriculum that is carefully planned and sequenced to build understanding over time. Learning opportunities encourage students to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively and make connections between different subjects. 

Lessons are designed to develop confidence and independence through clear explanations, structured practice and opportunities for students to apply their learning. Retrieval of prior knowledge and regular opportunities to revisit key concepts help students build long term understanding and secure progression throughout KS3.

Students regularly explore how knowledge and skills from different subjects’ link to a wide range of career pathways, including healthcare, engineering, business, education, technology, creative industries, public services and environmental careers. 

By making explicit links between classroom learning and future employment opportunities, we help students understand the relevance of their studies and raise aspirations for future success. 

The KS3 curriculum supports our academy values by encouraging resilience, respect, responsibility, curiosity and ambition. Through collaborative learning, independent study and enrichment activities, students learn to appreciate different perspectives, make informed decisions and contribute positively to society. 

Students are supported to become reflective, respectful and responsible individuals who demonstrate positive attitudes towards learning and personal development. 

Literacy and numeracy are embedded across all subjects. Students develop literacy skills through reading, writing, speaking, listening and the use of subject-specific vocabulary. Opportunities for extended writing and structured discussion help students communicate effectively and confidently. 

Numeracy skills are reinforced through data analysis, problem-solving, interpretation of information, measurement and mathematical reasoning across a range of curriculum areas. These skills support achievement both within school and beyond.

Teaching across KS3 follows evidence-informed approaches that support effective learning. Lessons include retrieval practice, explicit instruction, modelling, guided practice and opportunities for independent application. 

Learning is carefully sequenced and broken into manageable steps to ensure students develop secure understanding and can make meaningful connections between topics and subjects.  

Progress is secured through a well planned curriculum that builds knowledge and skills over time. Teachers regularly assess understanding, identify misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet students' needs. 

High expectations, adaptive teaching strategies, targeted support and appropriate challenge ensure all students can achieve success while developing confidence in their abilities.  

Formative assessment is an integral part of KS3 teaching and learning. Teachers use questioning, retrieval activities, low stakes quizzes, mini-whiteboard tasks and checks for understanding to assess learning throughout lessons. 

This allows teachers to respond quickly to students' needs, address misconceptions and provide timely support.  

Lessons are designed to make learning accessible to all students. Teachers use modelling, worked examples, visual supports, structured tasks and guided practice to help students understand new concepts. 

Support is gradually removed as students gain confidence and independence, enabling them to become successful learners who can apply their knowledge independently.  

Students receive regular feedback through verbal guidance, written feedback, self-assessment, peer assessment and whole-class feedback activities. 

Feedback is focused on helping students understand their strengths, identify next steps and improve their learning over time.  

Success at KS3 means that every student is engaged in learning, demonstrates progress, applies knowledge confidently and develops the skills needed for future study. 

Students use subject-specific vocabulary accurately, think critically, communicate effectively and demonstrate resilience when faced with challenge. All students are supported to achieve their potential regardless of their starting point.
